I was a Republican and was learning the basics of redistricting in the State of Jefferson. This is Mission 1 on basic.

First, what I had to do to accomplish the mission was to make sure all the Republicans had an equal share of land. Next, I had to make borders around their homes to make sure they equally get the same amount of population around 640,00 and 650,000. Then, in order to make them satisfied, I had to carefully put borders around their property without taking their party out of their house. Finally, when I got all the parties an equal amount of population, I had to submit for approval.

Next, the results were successful. I ended up getting everyone’s approval and got to move onto the next mission. Although, there was some challenge to accomplishing this mission. For example, I had to make sure everyone got a fair share of population. Also, I had to make them happy in order for me to move on. Finally, even though it was on a basic level, it was still challenging and required a lot of thinking.

Mission 2(basic)

I was a Democratic and I did Gerrymander the State of Hamilton in your party’s favor.

First, what I had to do to accomplish this mission is to get at least three of the districts to get approved by the Adams State Legislature. I had to cram the Republics to only a little space. That is called “packaging” which means to help the national party take control of Congress and the committee structure. Also, I had to be very careful not to take away their homes from their own parties. Finally, I also needed to keep the population between 640,000 and 650,00, just like the first mission.

Next, the results were successful and were passed on to the next mission. On the other hand, there were some difficulties passing this mission. You had to make sure they were happy, while them having a similar amount of people. Also, I had to be careful to not take their homes away from their parties. Finally, I do believe this was challenging, but it was fun.

Mission 3 (basic)

I was a Republican and I had to create a bipartisan gerrymander in the State of Madison.

First, I had to make sure the Republicans got over 55% Republicans in that land, while having the two parties having an equal amount of population. Again, I also have to keep an amount of 640,000 and 650,000 people just like the previous missions.

Next, I was successful in this mission, but it took a while. It was a bit confusing on how to please them without taking too much land away or giving too much. I ran into the Republicans wanting more republicans, but I couldn’t give them more or else they get more land. I think this mission was hard then the previous two.

Mission 4 (basic)

I was a Democratic and I had to ensure minority representation in the State of Hamilton.

First, what I had to do to complete this mission was to create a new district who has 65% African Americans in the population. I also had to make sure all of the parties had a population of 640,000-650,000.

Next, although it took me a while, I was successful completing this mission. It was tough because I had to try to keep all the parties happy which was hard since I had to put in a new district. Also, it was hard getting 65% African Americans in the new district since it would be taking away some Democrats away from a party.

Mission 5 (basic)

I am a Republican and I must redraw the districts under the Tanner Reform Bill rules to establish a population equality (640,000-650,000).

First, what I had to do was to make sure the Court approves a plan. Also, that the Commission cannot consider party demographics. Finally, I have to redraw districts and keep the populations equal between 640,000 and 650,000.

Next, I wasn’t successful in this mission. In fact, it was more challenging to me than all the other ones. I couldn’t pass this mission because I didn’t really the objective of this mission. Also, I was confused of what they wanted since there was no Democratic and Republicans.

Mission 6 (advanced)

I am a Republican and I have to establish population equality. So, I have to make sure the districts have an equal population with the same number of people. Finally, I have to keep the population between 640,000 and 650,000.

Next, I was successful in this mission. It was Mission 1, but on advanced. I had no problems on this mission. I had to maintain the population between 640,000 and 650,000. It was not really difficult.

Mission 7 (advanced)

I am a Democratic and I have to give the party of the Republicans a total of three districts. I also have to retain the population between 640,000 and 650,000 to keep population equality.

Next, the mission was successful. I had to limit the Republicans to a little space, but I still managed to keep them happy. It was a bit difficult since it was on advanced. The problems I ran into were making sure I keep everyone happy while trying to accomplish the mission.

The Redistricting game is a game based around political ‘missions’. The job is to do the missions and keep the people and politicians happy. The democratic party I chose was Democrat.

Mission 1: Population Equality (Basic)

For the first district, I was given 4 districts, each district has different number in population. My mission is to rearrange the districts and change them to all have a population between 640,000- 650,000.

The mission wasn’t at all difficult, the most difficult thing about it, is to keep the people who are in charge of the district’s home in the same district. I was successful on the first try.

Mission 1: Population Equality (Advance)

The advance level of this mission was exactly the same as the basic level. I was yet again, successful on the first try.

Mission 2: Partisan Gerrymander (Basic)

Mission 2 was all about rearranging the districts and having 3 districts to have majority of residents from your party. At the end, a district run by a republican was not happy to have mostly democrats in their district. All districts should have a population between 640,000-650,000.

In this mission, the job was extremely difficult for me, mostly because at first I wasn’t understanding what I had to do. Once after I knew what was asked of me, everything was easier. I was succeeding after 40+ minutes of trying.

Mission 2: Partisan Gerrymander (Advance)

The rules for the advance mission was the same, as always, as the basic level one. Expect the numbers you start out with are lower in the political parties and higher in population. The level ended with you creating 3 higher percentage of democrats in the total of 4 districts, cutting out one political parties district was the way to win the level.

Mission 3: Bi-Partisan Gerrymander (Basic)

What was required for this mission was to keep all the districts between the population count of 640,000-650,000 and have the majority of the people from their party at 55%.

This mission was very easy. Mostly because what I had to do for this mission, I was trying to do for the last mission. The only difficult thing was trying to make them compact.

Mission 3: Bi-Partisan Gerrymander (Advance)

The advanced level was surprisingly easy. It did not differ from the basic level at all. The only thing that has changed was the rearrangement of the districts.

Mission 4: Voting Rights Act (Basic)

In this mission, all I had to do was transform a new district to have a 65% majority of African Americans, and also having it between the 640,000-650,000 population of people. Also, adding a new representative to create a 5th new district.

This mission was a little challenging.

Mission 5: Reform (Basic) FAILED

This extremely difficult mission was impossible to find a solution to. You’re given a map with 4 districts on them. You’re supposed to rearrange them and make them between the population of 640,000-650,000. The trick is the map only has dots of population on them. No political parties or homes of the district representatives are shown. This proves to be very difficult because it usually ends up one political party happy and the other upset. I’ve failed to figure out a way to keep them both happy.
